About Helly Hansen One of the most well known outdoor gear makers around, Helly Hansen was first established in 1877 when Norwegian captain Helly Juell and his wife Maren Margarethe started making oilskin jackets, trousers, sou'westers, and tarpaulins, made from coarse linen soaked in linseed oil. Their products' unusual durability and weather protection quickly caught on. The company won a diploma for excellence at the 1878 Paris Expo, and began exporting its products.
